HEALTH ALERT FOR HAITI TRAVELERS Updated January 20, 2010 Our clinic has been providing preparation for many travelers to Haiti to aid in recovery after the January 12th. earthquake. Travelers should be well prepared, especially in these early days and weeks when very limited infrastructure and support are available. Depending on the resources of the organization for whom you are traveling, you should be as self-contained, equipped and prepared as possible. Below are some preparations and supplies to consider taking with you. A WORD TO THE WISE: Don’t be a burden. Especially early on,don’t go unless you are well prepared, familiar with living in a disaster environment and have skills that are needed. The rescue effort, at least initially, needs more than just a strong body and good intentions.
VACCINATIONS: Basics: Tetanus, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid Fever, Polio booster shot Check if you are up to date on: MMR (Measles Mumps Rubella), Seasonal and H1N1 ‘flu, Chickenpox Tuberculin (Tb) test could be considered both before and after return to check for exposure.
MEDICATIONS: Malaria pills--Chloroquine is usually the drug of choice but Malarone (expensive) and Doxycycline could be used. Our physician can discuss the choice with you. Diarrhea treatment antibiotics: The combination of Ciprofloxacin and Imodium ADĘ works well if you become ill. Azithromycin can also be used. Good supply of any prescription medicines you take
SUPPLIES: Insect repellent, possibly a mosquito net if you will not be sure of adequate housing Water Purification: tablets (iodine or chlorine) are most compact, or other system Good, compact first aid kit.
